Dec 12, 2024, 04:19 PM
Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. have unveiled a joint initiative into the mixed-reality market, introducing a new operating system called Android XR and a mixed-reality headset codenamed Project Moohan. Set to launch in 2025, the headset aims to challenge devices from Apple Inc. and Meta Platforms Inc. Samsung's device will be the first to run on Android XR, an operating system developed by Google specifically for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices. Qualcomm Inc. is collaborating on the project, providing the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset to power the device. Unity Technologies announced day-one support for Android XR, enabling developers to easily port existing content from Meta's Quest platform. The devices feature integration with Google's AI assistant, Gemini, offering contextually aware AI assistance. Major applications like Google Maps, Photos, and YouTube will be integrated into the XR ecosystem.
