Klubnik's Three TDs Put Clemson Up 24-7 Over SMU at Halftime in ACC Championship
Dec 8, 2024, 01:59 AM
Clemson took a commanding 24-7 lead over SMU at halftime of the ACC Championship Game, capitalizing on early turnovers and penalties by the Mustangs. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead within the first four minutes, following a strip sack of SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings by defensive end T.J. Parker. This turnover set up a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cade Klubnik to wide-open freshman receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. Klubnik threw three touchdown passes in the first quarter, including another 43-yard strike to Wesco after a controversial roughing the passer penalty extended the drive. SMU's only score came on a 24-yard quarterback draw by Jennings. Clemson's freshman kicker Nolan Hauser made a 44-yard field goal following an earlier miss. The Tigers led 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. SMU struggled with turnovers, penalties—including three costly personal fouls—and dropped passes, putting their defense in difficult positions as Clemson started three of its first four drives in SMU territory. Despite outgaining Clemson 193-183 in total yards and securing 13 first downs to Clemson's nine, the Mustangs were unable to convert opportunities into points. SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said at halftime, "The fact we're only down 24-7 is a miracle." The Mustangs face their largest deficit of the season, needing a significant second-half comeback to challenge the Tigers.
