Sirius XM Liable for Difficult Subscription Cancellations in NY, Plans to Appeal
Nov 22, 2024, 05:20 PM
A New York state judge has ruled that Sirius XM Radio Inc. violated federal law by making it excessively difficult for customers to cancel their subscriptions. The judge found that SiriusXM's cancellation process, which involved lengthy calls and multiple service offers, contravened the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act. Sirius XM has announced plans to appeal the ruling but will comply with the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) new 'click-to-cancel' rule in the meantime. The ruling stems from a lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who accused the satellite radio and streaming company of making cancellations harder than signups. The decision has prompted Sirius XM to revise its subscription cancellation procedures in New York to make them faster and easier, ensuring compliance with federal consumer protection laws.
