Al-Aqsa Imam Ikrima Sabri Arrested by Israel, Released with Conditions
Aug 2, 2024, 04:10 PM
Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, the Imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque and former Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, was arrested by Israeli forces following his eulogy for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh during Friday prayers at Temple Mount. The arrest occurred after National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir called for an immediate investigation, citing suspicions of incitement and support for terrorism. Sabri, a prominent 85-year-old cleric, was detained at his home in Jerusalem. He had mourned Haniyeh, referring to him as a martyr. His lawyer confirmed that Sabri was released on the condition that he stays away from the Al-Aqsa compound until August 8th.
