Bangladesh Seeks Extradition of Sheikh Hasina, Accused of Genocide; India Confirms Receipt
Dec 23, 2024, 11:30 AM
Bangladesh's interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted on August 5 following a student-led uprising. The request comes after Interpol issued a red notice for Hasina, who is accused of genocide and mass killings during student protests. The Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry sent a diplomatic note, known as a note verbale, to India's Ministry of External Affairs, seeking Hasina's return to face judicial proceedings on charges including crimes against humanity. The request was confirmed by Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain and Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. India has acknowledged receiving the extradition request, as confirmed by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, but has not yet commented on the matter. The 2013 extradition treaty between the two countries is expected to play a role in the proceedings.
