Virginia Must Reinstate 1,600 Purged Voters Ahead of Election; Appeals to Supreme Court
Oct 28, 2024, 12:06 AM
A federal judge, Judge Giles, has ordered Virginia to reinstate over 1,600 voter registrations that the state had purged ahead of the upcoming election in an effort to remove suspected noncitizens from its voter rolls. The judge ruled that the purge was unlawful, concluding that the state's program violated federal law. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit denied Virginia's request for an emergency stay of the ruling. Virginia officials, including Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares, have vowed to appeal the decision and have filed an emergency application with the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the removals to proceed. The Supreme Court has requested a response by 3 p.m. on October 29.
