Nicolas Sarkozy Faces Trial Over Alleged €50 Million Libyan Financing for 2007 Campaign
Jan 5, 2025, 11:45 AM
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is set to stand trial starting Monday, January 6, 2025, over allegations that he accepted illegal campaign financing from the late Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi for his successful 2007 presidential campaign. Sarkozy, who has already been convicted twice in separate cases, faces charges of corruption, passive bribery, criminal association, illegal campaign financing, and concealment of public fund embezzlement. The trial, which is expected to last until April 10, 2025, will also involve three former ministers and nine other defendants. The accusations stem from a purported pact between Sarkozy and Kadhafi, where the Libyan leader allegedly provided around €50 million in exchange for political favors, including international rehabilitation and lucrative contracts. Sarkozy has denied these allegations, claiming they are part of a conspiracy against him.
