Ruth Chepngetich Shatters Women's Marathon World Record in Chicago with 2:09:57, First Sub-2:10
Oct 13, 2024, 03:37 PM
Kenya's Ruth Chepngetich made history at the 2024 Chicago Marathon by shattering the women's marathon world record with an unofficial time of 2:09:57. This remarkable achievement makes her the first woman to run a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes, breaking the previous record of 2:11:53 set by Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa in Berlin in 2023. Chepngetich's performance was dominant as she led the race from the start and finished more than seven minutes ahead of her nearest rival. This victory also marked her third Chicago Marathon title. The marathon also saw notable performances from American runners, with Susanna Sullivan finishing as the top American woman in 2:21:56, placing seventh overall, and CJ Albertson as the top American man, also in seventh place, with a time of 2:08:17.
