U.S. Deploys 130 Troops and Missiles to Shemya Island Amid Russian Military Activity
Sep 18, 2024, 12:47 AM
The U.S. military has moved approximately 130 soldiers and mobile rocket launchers to Shemya Island, a remote location in the Aleutian chain of western Alaska, in response to increased Russian military activity in the area. This deployment follows a 'force projection' training exercise conducted by the Army on the island, which is less than 300 miles from the Russian coast. The decision comes amid heightened concerns over Russian and Chinese military maneuvers in the Pacific and Arctic oceans. General Guillot, Commander of NORAD and NORTHCOM, discussed the situation with Senator Lisa Murkowski, highlighting the strategic importance of the region. Updates were also received from the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Defense Intelligence regarding the intentions of the Russian occupiers.
