Rep. Clay Higgins Faces Backlash, Potential Censure Over Deleted Racist Tweet About Haitians
Sep 25, 2024, 08:55 PM
Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) is facing significant backlash for a tweet in which he described Haitians as 'wild' and Haiti as the 'nastiest country in the western hemisphere.' The tweet, which also mentioned Haitians practicing 'vudu,' was widely condemned as racist. Following confrontations with colleagues, including CBC Chair Steven Horsford and Rep. Byron Donalds on the House floor, Higgins deleted the tweet. Horsford has called for Higgins to be censured, stating that the tweet incites hate and fear. Horsford also tried to make a motion to refer the issue to Ethics, but the chair declined. House Minority Whip Steve Scalise objected to the censure motion, noting that the tweet had already been deleted.
