Dike Breach in Dongting Lake, 220 Meters Wide, Prompts Major Rescue Efforts; Nearly 6,000 Residents Relocated
Jul 6, 2024, 04:37 AM
A dike breach in Dongting Lake, Central China's Hunan Province, occurred on Friday afternoon following failed emergency repair efforts. The breach, which has widened to 220 meters, resulted from downpours and prolonged inundation. Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged all-out rescue and relief work to safeguard lives and property. Local authorities have relocated nearly 6,000 residents, including 5,755 from Huarong County, and imposed traffic control to ensure rescue and disaster relief operations. Dongting Lake is China's second-largest freshwater lake. Efforts to seal the breach are underway, with the water level difference between the lake and the flooded area now at 0.17 meters. China Anneng Construction Group has joined the rescue operations.
