BJP Calls 12-Hour West Bengal Bandh on August 28 Over Nabanna Abhijan Police Actions
Aug 28, 2024, 02:49 AM
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal on August 28, 2024, from 6 AM to 6 PM, in response to police actions during a protest march to the state secretariat, Nabanna. The protest, known as 'Nabanna Abhijan,' was organized to address grievances regarding the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The BJP claims that the police used excessive force, including tear gas and water cannons, against demonstrators during clashes on August 27. Sukanta Majumdar, the West Bengal BJP president, announced the bandh, urging citizens to participate. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has opposed the bandh, calling it a conspiracy. The bandh has led to disruptions in public transport, with reports of closed shops and blocked railway tracks in various parts of the state. BJP leader Locket Chatterjee was detained during the protests.
