Klimt's 'Portrait of Miss Lieser' Fetches Record $32 Million at Vienna Auction
Apr 24, 2024, 05:55 PM
A long-lost portrait by Gustav Klimt, titled 'Portrait of Miss Lieser,' which had disappeared for nearly a century, sold for 30 million euros ($32 million, Ksh.4.3 billion, £26 million) at an auction in Vienna. The painting, commissioned by a Jewish family who fled Austria in 1930, was expected to fetch more than $30 million due to its historical significance and rarity. Despite its controversial past linked to the Nazi era, the portrait set a record for the highest price at an Austrian auction. The artwork, left unfinished due to Klimt's death, still garnered significant attention and a high selling price.
