Armenia Protests: Archbishop Bagrat Demands PM Resign, Russia to Withdraw Troops
May 9, 2024, 05:50 PM
In Armenia, massive protests have erupted in the capital city of Yerevan, particularly at Republic Square, led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan and the Tavush for the Motherland movement. The protests are in response to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's decision to cede control of some border villages to Azerbaijan as part of a border delimitation agreement. The protesters, including tens of thousands of citizens, are demanding Pashinyan's resignation. Archbishop Bagrat issued an ultimatum, giving Pashinyan an hour to resign. Amidst the political turmoil, Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to withdraw Russian troops and border guards from Armenia following discussions with Pashinyan.
