NY Authorities Seize Instagram Star Squirrel Peanut from Owner After Complaints
Nov 1, 2024, 03:59 AM
An Instagram-famous pet squirrel named Peanut, who amassed over 500,000 followers, was seized by New York state authorities from his owner Mark Longo's home in Pine City, New York, on Wednesday. The state's Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officers executed a search warrant following multiple anonymous complaints about the squirrel, which included allegations of unsafe housing and concerns about wildlife management. At least six DEC officers were involved in the seizure. Peanut had been living with Longo for seven years after being rescued as an orphaned squirrel, inspiring Longo to start an animal sanctuary. Alongside Peanut, a raccoon named Fred was also taken into custody. Longo is pleading with authorities to return his beloved pets, fearing that Peanut may be euthanized.
