Russia Releases WSJ Reporter Evan Gershkovich and Paul Whelan in Major Multi-Country Prisoner Swap
Aug 1, 2024, 12:21 PM
Russia has agreed to a major multi-country prisoner swap involving the United States and its allies. As part of the exchange, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan have been released from Russian custody. Gershkovich was detained in March 2023 on espionage charges and was serving a 16-year sentence. The swap also includes other high-profile prisoners such as Russian political prisoner Vladimir Kara-Murza and Vadim Krasikov. The exchange, which could involve as many as 30 people, is reported to be the largest since the Cold War and involves multiple countries including Germany, Slovenia, Britain, and Belarus. The released prisoners are en route to destinations outside of Russia.
