Yankees Sign Former MVP Paul Goldschmidt to One-Year, $12.5 Million Deal for First Base
Dec 21, 2024, 06:02 PM
The New York Yankees have agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million contract with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, filling a void at first base left by the departure of Anthony Rizzo. Goldschmidt, who won the National League MVP award in 2022, is coming off a down year in 2024 where he batted .245 with a .716 OPS and 65 RBIs in 154 games with the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite his recent performance, the Yankees are betting on the 37-year-old's potential to rebound, given his history of strong batted-ball metrics and his performance against left-handed pitching. Goldschmidt, a four-time Gold Glove winner, hit 22 home runs last season and is considered a potential Hall of Fame first baseman. The signing adds another former MVP to the Yankees' roster, joining Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger.
