Blue Jays' Orelvis Martinez, 22, Suspended 80 Games for PED Violation After MLB Debut
Jun 23, 2024, 03:24 PM
Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has been suspended for 80 games by Major League Baseball for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Martinez, 22, tested positive for clomiphene, a performance-enhancing substance. The suspension comes just two days after Martinez made his Major League debut on Friday against the Guardians. Martinez is considered Toronto's top hitting prospect and their number two overall prospect. The Blue Jays have expressed disappointment in the situation, with General Manager Ross Atkins stating, 'We were both surprised and disappointed to learn of Martinez’s suspension. We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis has learned from this mistake.' Martinez, who cited fertility treatment as a reason for the positive test, is eligible to return on September 23. In his brief time in the majors, Martinez had been leading the organization with 16 home runs this year.
