NYC Converts Hotels to Migrant Shelters, Offers $4,000 to Families for Permanent Housing, Military Assists
Sep 4, 2024, 02:57 PM
The City of New York has been converting five-star hotels into shelters for migrants, paying hotel owners $350 per night to house them. Additionally, the city's Department of Homeless Services has provided 150 migrant families with up to $4,000 each to exit the shelter system and move into permanent housing. This initiative aims to reduce the annual cost of around $70,000 per migrant family. The Hotel Wolcott, located just north of Madison Square Park, is one of the hotels being used for this purpose, with military personnel assisting in the operation. There have been calls for migrants to be placed in detention facilities upstate instead.
