US Confirms 3,000 North Korean Troops Arrive in Russia for Possible Deployment to Ukraine
Oct 24, 2024, 10:02 AM
The United States has confirmed that North Korean troops have been sent to Russia, raising concerns about a potential escalation in the Ukraine conflict. U.S. officials, including National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, stated that at least 3,000 North Korean soldiers arrived in eastern Russia in early to mid-October. These troops were reportedly transported by ship from the Wonsan region to Vladivostok and are undergoing training at various military sites. Ukrainian intelligence claims that more than 12,000 North Korean soldiers, including 500 officers and three generals, have arrived in Russia, with the first units observed in the Kursk region on October 23. South Korean intelligence suggests that North Korea plans to send up to 10,000 troops by December. The Netherlands' Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed that Russia is deploying at least 1,500 North Korean troops. John Kirby stated, "If North Korean soldiers do enter into combat, this development would demonstrate Russia’s growing desperation in its war against Ukraine," emphasizing that they would be considered legitimate military targets. U.S. officials express concern that North Korea's involvement signifies Russia's growing desperation and could further escalate the conflict. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko commented that the deployment of North Korean troops would be a step toward escalation if confirmed.
