North Korea Launches Hwasong-19 ICBM and Fires Seven Missiles Outside Japan's EEZ, UN Convenes Emergency Meeting
Nov 4, 2024, 10:47 PM
North Korea has conducted multiple ballistic missile tests, including the launch of a Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on October 31 at approximately 7:11 AM local time, which reportedly flew further than any previous North Korean missile. On November 4 and 5, North Korea fired at least seven ballistic missiles, including short-range missiles, into the East Sea (Sea of Japan), according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Japanese government. These missiles reached an altitude of about 100 kilometers and flew approximately 400 kilometers before landing outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting at 10 AM New York time on November 4 to discuss the situation, with Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari warning that the launches represent a grave threat to regional stability. The G7 Foreign Ministers issued a statement condemning North Korea's actions as serious violations of UN Security Council resolutions. North Korea has stated that it is accelerating its nuclear weapons program in response to international criticism.
