New Mexico Lobos stunned No. 18 Washington State Cougars with a 38-35 victory at University Stadium in Albuquerque on Saturday night. This marks the Lobos' first win over a ranked opponent since 2003. Sophomore quarterback Devon Dampier led New Mexico with an outstanding dual-threat performance, including a 4-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds left to secure the win. Dampier also threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Medford and had a 33-yard rushing touchdown, contributing to his record-breaking season with over 1,000 rushing yards. Running back Eli Sanders added a 26-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 28-28 late in the third quarter. Washington State quarterback John Mateer threw three touchdown passes to Kyle Williams and had four total touchdowns in the first half, but the Cougars were held scoreless for much of the second half. The loss ends Washington State's hopes of reaching the College Football Playoff. Under head coach Bronco Mendenhall, the Lobos improved to 5-6 and can become bowl eligible with one more win.
