Neuralink Successfully Implants Second Brain Chip with 400 Electrodes in Patient with Spinal Cord Injury
Aug 5, 2024, 01:55 AM
Elon Musk has announced that Neuralink has successfully implanted its brain chip into a second human patient. The patient, who has a spinal cord injury similar to the first participant, can control a mouse using only their thoughts. Musk shared this milestone during a podcast with Lex Fridman, highlighting the progress in Neuralink's brain-machine interface technology. The implant, containing 400 electrodes, is working well, and Musk aims to have 10 devices implanted in patients by the end of the year. He also envisions that within a year or two, a person with a Neuralink implant will be able to outperform a professional gamer. Neuralink's goal is to enable paralyzed individuals to use digital devices solely through thought, potentially giving them capabilities beyond normal human communication speeds. Musk expects over 1,000 people to have Neuralink implants by 2026.
