Netflix's Tyson-Paul Fight Draws 108 Million Viewers, Breaks Streaming and Gate Records Despite Glitches
Nov 18, 2024, 10:57 PM
Netflix's livestream of the boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson drew record-breaking viewership, with the streaming platform reporting that over 60 million households worldwide tuned in on Friday. The event peaked at 65 million concurrent streams, including 38 million in the US, despite technical glitches including buffering and streaming issues that affected many viewers. Netflix acknowledged the technical problems but declared the livestream a success, demonstrating its ability to attract a massive global audience for a live event. The fight attracted over 70,000 live attendees and generated $18.1 million in gate revenue, setting a record for the highest combat sports gate outside of Las Vegas. The interest in the fight was over 900% higher than any other major boxing or MMA event in 2024. The event also set records in sports betting, becoming the most bet combat sport event in history at multiple sportsbooks. Later, Netflix announced that the fight had an estimated average minute audience (AMA) of 108 million live viewers, making it the most-streamed global sporting event ever.
