North Korea Sends 12,000 Troops to Russia; South Korea Protests, Zelensky Calls for Strong Response
Oct 21, 2024, 06:19 AM
Reports have emerged alleging that North Korea has dispatched up to 12,000 troops to Russia to aid in the war against Ukraine, with 1,500 soldiers reportedly already arrived. Ukrainian officials and South Korean intelligence sources claim that North Korean soldiers, including elite Special Operations Forces, have been sent to Russia's Far East. Videos have surfaced purporting to show North Korean recruits receiving Russian military uniforms and equipment, and South Korean satellites have captured images of troop movements. In response, South Korea summoned the Russian ambassador, demanding the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops from Russia. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte held talks with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, expressing concern over North Korea's involvement and requesting a delegation from South Korea to share more information. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for a strong international response, stating that North Korea's deepening military cooperation with Russia poses a significant escalation in the conflict. Additionally, reports indicate that Russian authorities detained 18 North Korean soldiers who attempted to flee their positions in Russia's Kursk region. There are also indications that these North Korean troops may be involved in assault operations against Ukrainian forces.
