NATO Launches 'Baltic Sentry' to Protect Baltic Sea Cables Amid Suspected Russian Sabotage

NATO has launched a new mission called 'Baltic Sentry' to strengthen the protection of critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region, following suspected sabotage of undersea cables in recent months. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced the mission during a summit of Baltic Sea NATO allies in Helsinki, co-hosted by Finnish President Alex Stubb and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal. The operation, under the command of Supreme Allied Commander General Chris Cavoli, will involve deploying frigates, patrol aircraft, naval drones, and submarines to enhance maritime presence and surveillance in the region. The move comes after several telecom and power cables were severed in the Baltic Sea, raising concerns about the security of critical infrastructure amid suspected involvement of Russia's 'shadow fleet.' NATO allies stated they stand ready to deter and defend against any threats to critical undersea infrastructure.
