Austin Distributes 7,000 Narcan Kits Amid Surge of 80 Overdoses, Nine Deaths
May 13, 2024, 10:45 PM
The City of Austin is responding to a recent surge in deadly overdoses by increasing the availability of naloxone, commonly known as Narcan. City leaders held a press conference to discuss the distribution of over 7,000 Narcan kits across Travis County, including to Austin libraries, city departments, community groups, and businesses near drug hot spots. This initiative follows nearly 80 overdoses in Austin this month, resulting in nine possible deaths. Representative Lloyd Doggett announced securing over $2 million in federal funding to support Austin Public Health and its partners in distributing Narcan kits and educating the community on opioid abuse. Austin health officials are also leading fentanyl overdose training sessions to further combat the crisis.
