Mpox Outbreak in Congo: Over 22,863 Cases, 622 Deaths Across Africa; Children Disproportionately Affected
Aug 28, 2024, 08:04 AM
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a severe mpox outbreak, with over 5,000 cases reported in South Kivu province since January. The outbreak has spread to neighboring countries, leading to a total of 22,863 cases and 622 deaths across Africa, with hundreds killed. A new variant of the virus is emerging, raising concerns about its potential to become a global pandemic. Children are disproportionately affected, accounting for over 80% of the deaths in the Congo. Despite the urgent need, vaccines are not immediately prioritized for the youngest and most vulnerable. The U.S. has donated 10,000 doses of mpox vaccines to Nigeria, the first African country to receive them. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other agencies are working to contain the outbreak, with vaccines expected to arrive in central Africa from September 1. The rapid spread of the virus is also expected to exacerbate fiscal pressures in sub-Saharan Africa, according to Fitch Ratings.
