Microsoft Signs $1.6 Billion, 20-Year Deal to Reopen Three Mile Island for Clean Energy AI Operations
Sep 23, 2024, 11:42 AM
Microsoft has signed a 20-year agreement with Constellation Energy Corp to restore the Three Mile Island nuclear site to power its AI operations. The site, infamous for the worst nuclear accident in U.S. history in 1979, will undergo a $1.6 billion refurbishment to restart Unit 1, which has been shut since 2019. The plant, located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, will provide 835MW of carbon-free electricity to Microsoft's data centers, supporting the tech giant's sustainability goals. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, marking a significant move towards clean energy for AI workloads.
