OpenAI Announces New Independent Safety Oversight Committee as Sam Altman Departs

OpenAI has announced that its Safety and Security Committee will become an independent Board oversight committee. This committee, which was established in May, will now be fully composed of independent board members and will be chaired by Zico Kolter. The committee will oversee safety frameworks for model releases and enhance safety oversight, cybersecurity, and transparency. This change follows the departure of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman from the committee. The group has also completed a 90-day security review. Microsoft-backed OpenAI made this announcement on Monday.
