Meta Partners with Palantir to Offer Llama AI to U.S. Defense After China's ChatBIT Violation
Nov 4, 2024, 05:22 PM
Chinese researchers linked to the People's Liberation Army have developed an AI model called ChatBIT for military applications using Meta's Llama technology, in violation of Meta's acceptable use policy. The AI model, similar to ChatGPT, can command drones equipped with electronic warfare weapons. In response, on November 4, 2024, Meta announced it has authorized the use of its Llama AI models for U.S. national security applications, making them available to over a dozen U.S. agencies and defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, Palantir Technologies, Anduril, Amazon Web Services, and Snowflake. This marks a shift in Meta's policy, as the company typically restricts military uses of its technology. Additionally, Scale AI announced Defense Llama, a language model purpose-built for American national security, developed in collaboration with Meta and defense experts.
