Brazilian MPF Gives Meta 30 Days to Clarify Fact-Checking Policy Changes Following Zuckerberg's Decision
Jan 8, 2025, 05:34 PM
The Brazilian Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has initiated an inquiry into Meta Platforms Inc., seeking clarification on whether the company's recent decision to end its independent fact-checking program in the United States will be implemented in Brazil. The MPF has given Meta 30 days to respond, as part of an ongoing civil inquiry started in 2021 that investigates the responsibility of digital platforms in combating misinformation and digital violence. The decision by Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, to replace fact-checking with a 'community notes' system, similar to that used by X (formerly Twitter), has raised concerns among Brazilian authorities. The future head of communication for President Lula's administration has criticized the move, stating it is detrimental to democracy. Additionally, Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes has emphasized that social media platforms must adhere to Brazilian laws, suggesting that the STF will not allow these platforms to be used for spreading hate speech or misinformation.
