Labour to Introduce Renters' Rights Bill Banning No-Fault Evictions for 11 Million Renters Next Week
Sep 11, 2024, 05:53 AM
The Labour government is set to introduce a Renters' Rights Bill to Parliament, which includes a ban on no-fault evictions. This landmark reform aims to provide greater security for 11 million renters in England. The bill, which will have its first Commons reading next week, seeks to address long-standing issues in the housing sector by preventing landlords from evicting tenants without cause. The legislation will scrap some of the most significant points of the 1988 Housing Act, including section 21 evictions. The move is expected to redress the balance between tenants and landlords and is supported by a majority of Britons across all political parties. Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook stated that the government hopes the ban will be in place by next summer. Labour leader Keir Starmer emphasized that the new laws will ensure secure housing for everyone.
