Ethics Panel Deadlocks on Gaetz Report, Stalling Trump's Attorney General Nominee
Nov 20, 2024, 06:32 PM
The House Ethics Committee has declined to release its report on former Representative Matt Gaetz's alleged misconduct, including sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, after a vote deadlocked along partisan lines during a two-hour meeting. Democrats on the committee, led by Congresswoman Susan Wild, have pushed for the report to be made public and shared with the Senate, emphasizing the need for transparency as Gaetz is President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for Attorney General. Republicans on the committee voted against the release. Following the meeting, Wild accused Committee Chair Michael Guest of betraying the committee's process by discussing their deliberations publicly. The committee plans to reconvene on December 5 to address the matter further. Meanwhile, Rep. Sean Casten has announced plans to introduce a privileged resolution to force a vote on releasing the report. Gaetz has been meeting with Republican senators, accompanied by Vice President-elect JD Vance, to garner support for his confirmation amid growing concerns. Some senators have expressed reluctance to proceed without access to the Ethics Committee's report.
