Russia's Marat Tambiyev Gets 16 Years for Accepting Record 1,032 Bitcoin Bribe from Hackers
Oct 8, 2024, 10:55 PM
Former Russian chief investigator Marat Tambiyev has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after being convicted of accepting a bribe of 1,032 bitcoins, worth approximately $65 million to $73 million, from an organized crime group he was investigating. This marks the largest bribe in modern Russian history. Tambiyev agreed not to confiscate the bitcoins from the hackers, effectively allowing them to keep their stolen cryptocurrency. He was arrested after accepting the bribe, which constituted half the loot, and turned a blind eye to their activities.
