Mamata Banerjee Visits RG Kar Doctors, Assures Action Amid Demand for Live-Streamed Meeting
Sep 14, 2024, 08:56 AM
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a surprise visit to the protest site of junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors have been protesting for several days, demanding justice for a colleague who was raped and murdered. They have refused to meet with the Chief Minister unless the meeting is live-streamed, citing a need for transparency. Banerjee assured the doctors that she would look into their demands and take appropriate action if anyone is found guilty. She also promised that no action would be taken against the protesting doctors. Despite her assurances, the doctors have remained firm on their demand for a live-streamed meeting and have written to President Murmu and Prime Minister Modi seeking their intervention. The state government has invited the doctors to a meeting at Banerjee's residence, but the doctors have refused to attend without live streaming. The deadlock continues as both sides seek a resolution to the crisis. The ongoing impasse has resulted in 27 lives lost and seven lakh patients suffering due to the disruption of medical services. Banerjee visited the protest site at Swasthya Bhawan to address the issue.
