EU's Chat Control Proposal Faces Opposition from Signal; Vote Tomorrow
Jun 18, 2024, 08:30 AM
The European Union is considering a controversial proposal, known as the Chat Control law, which mandates the scanning of all photos and videos sent through private messengers, including encrypted apps like Signal. This measure, rebranded as 'upload moderation,' aims to detect Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). However, critics argue it fundamentally undermines encryption and constitutes mass surveillance. Signal president Meredith Whittaker has voiced strong opposition, warning that the proposal could severely compromise online security. Users will have to agree via terms and conditions or pop-up messages that all images and videos sent will be scanned. The Belgian chairmanship of the EU Council plans to vote on this proposal tomorrow.
