VisitFTC Bans Hidden 'Junk Fees' in Tickets, Hotels, and Vacation Rentals, Deeming Them Unfair and Deceptive
Dec 17, 2024, 07:21 PM
On Tuesday, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) finalized a rule banning hidden "junk fees" for live event tickets, hotels, and vacation rentals, deeming the practice "unfair" and "deceptive." The regulation requires businesses to disclose total prices upfront, prohibiting companies from concealing additional charges such as "resort fees," "convenience fees," or "service fees" until the end of the checkout process. FTC Chair Lina Khan stated that consumers deserve to know upfront what they are being asked to pay without worrying they will later be hit with mystery fees they can't avoid. The rule aims to promote price transparency and save consumers time and money by eliminating surprise fees associated with bookings for events and accommodations. This move is part of the Biden administration's efforts to combat deceptive pricing practices and provide financial relief to consumers.
