Lingo Telecom Fined $1M by FCC for Biden Deepfake Robocalls in New Hampshire
Aug 21, 2024, 10:38 PM
Lingo Telecom, a Texas-based company, has agreed to pay a $1 million fine to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for its involvement in transmitting AI-generated robocalls that impersonated President Joe Biden. These calls, which were made ahead of the New Hampshire Democratic primary, used generative AI voice-cloning technology to spread disinformation and discourage voters from supporting Biden. The FCC's enforcement action highlights the growing concern over the misuse of artificial intelligence in political campaigns. As part of the settlement, Lingo Telecom is also required to implement stronger procedures to combat illegal spoofing and robocalling over its network.
