Verstappen Wins São Paulo GP from 17th; Alpine Achieves First Double Podium Since 2006
Nov 3, 2024, 06:11 PM
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing achieved a remarkable victory at the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix, starting from 17th position on the grid to finish first, winning by a margin of 19 seconds. In a race marked by wet weather and challenging conditions, Verstappen delivered one of his greatest drives, setting 17 fastest laps and ending his winless streak since the Spanish Grand Prix in June. Only five previous races in Formula 1 history have been won from 17th or lower on the grid. The win extends his lead in the drivers' championship over Lando Norris of McLaren to 62 points, with Verstappen able to clinch his fourth world championship at the next race in Las Vegas. The race also saw a double podium for the Alpine team, with Esteban Ocon finishing second and Pierre Gasly finishing third. This marks Alpine's first double podium since the 2006 Japanese Grand Prix and moves the team up to sixth in the constructors' championship. The top ten finishers were Verstappen, Ocon, Gasly, George Russell, Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, Yuki Tsunoda, Liam Lawson, and Lewis Hamilton. Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez finished just outside the points in 11th place. Lando Norris, who started the race from pole position, finished sixth, losing ground to Verstappen in the championship standings.
