Caribbean Nations Demand £200 Billion in Slave Trade Reparations at Commonwealth Summit
Oct 14, 2024, 04:21 AM
Caribbean nations are set to demand £200 billion in reparations from the UK for its role in the transatlantic slave trade at the upcoming Commonwealth summit in Samoa. The demand is led by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and supported by 15 Caribbean countries. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who identifies as Caribbean, has been called upon by Caribbean leaders, including Hilary Beckles, to secure these reparations. The reparations bill is estimated to range from £206 billion to £19 trillion, according to academics and lawyers. The Daily Mail reported that the amount could be as high as $270 billion. King Charles and Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to face these demands at the summit.
