Trump-Endorsed Nancy Mace Wins South Carolina GOP Primary, Defeats McCarthy-Backed Challenger, No Runoff
Jun 12, 2024, 12:42 AM
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) has won the Republican primary for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District on June 11, defeating challenger Catherine Templeton, who was backed by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Mace, who was one of eight House Republicans to vote for McCarthy's removal as speaker last year, faced significant opposition and financial backing against her. Despite this, she secured the nomination with the endorsement of former President Donald Trump. The primary was seen as a critical test for McCarthy's political influence and a response to Mace's role in his ouster. Mace's victory, part of McCarthy's so-called revenge tour, ensures her candidacy for a third term in Congress and she is expected to avoid a runoff.
