Former Raptors Player Jontay Porter Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud in Betting Scandal
Jul 10, 2024, 06:26 PM
Former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in a federal criminal case tied to a betting scandal. On July 10, Porter, who was banned from the NBA earlier this year, admitted to placing more than a dozen bets on basketball games and tipping off gamblers to clear his gambling debts. The scheme reportedly earned shady bettors $1 million. Porter faces 41-51 months of imprisonment and $456,000 in fines and restitution. His arraignment and plea agreement hearing were held in Brooklyn federal court, where he acknowledged his wrongdoing and expressed remorse for his conduct. The case also involves four co-conspirators.
