Oct 13, 2024, 10:19 AM
Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6(4), 6-3 to win the Shanghai Masters, becoming the youngest champion in the tournament's history at 23 years and 58 days old. This victory marks Sinner's fourth Masters 1000 title and his seventh ATP title of the year, more than any other male player in 2024. Sinner has now beaten Djokovic three times in a row, extending their head-to-head record to 4-4. Remarkably, Sinner did not face a single break point during the match, and Djokovic was unable to force a deuce on his serve. Sinner is the first player to not face break points in consecutive matches against Djokovic. He is also the first man to beat Djokovic in a Shanghai final and the first Italian to win the tournament. Sinner's win makes him the youngest player since Rafael Nadal in 2009 to win three or more ATP Masters 1000 titles in a calendar year. Additionally, he is only the fifth player aged 23 or under in the Open Era to win six or more ATP titles on hard courts in a calendar year. Sinner joins Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the third player to win the Australian Open, the US Open, and three or more Masters 1000 events on hard courts in a single season, and is the youngest among them. With this victory, Sinner solidifies his position as the ATP Year-End No. 1 for 2024. After the match, Sinner said of Djokovic, "He doesn't have any weaknesses."
