PSOE's Julio Millán Takes Jaén Mayoralty with Jaén Merece Más Support, Backed by Montero
Jan 2, 2025, 12:20 PM
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has regained control of the Jaén city hall following a successful motion of censure against the People's Party (PP). Julio Millán of the PSOE was sworn in as the new mayor of Jaén, supported by 11 PSOE councilors and three from the local party Jaén Merece Más. The motion ended the tenure of PP's Agustín González, who had been mayor since the 2023 municipal elections. The PSOE and Jaén Merece Más secured a total of 14 votes in favor of the motion, while the PP and Vox, with 11 and 2 votes respectively, opposed it. The agreement between PSOE and Jaén Merece Más was backed by both parties' leaderships, with the PSOE's support coming from María Jesús Montero, the party's deputy secretary general and Spain's Minister of Finance. This change marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Andalusia, as it breaks the PP's control over all eight provincial capitals. The agreement also includes measures to address Jaén's municipal debt, which stands at 600 million euros.
