Taliban Refugee Minister with $5 Million Bounty Killed by ISIS-K in Kabul
Dec 11, 2024, 02:01 PM
Khalil ur-Rehman Haqqani, the Afghan Taliban's Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, was killed on Wednesday in a suicide bombing at his ministry's headquarters in Kabul. The attack, which occurred inside the ministry building, also claimed the lives of at least six others. The attacker reportedly bypassed security by pretending to have a steel rod due to a bone fracture. The Taliban blamed the Islamic State group's Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) for the attack. Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, condemned the attack and offered condolences. Khalil Haqqani was a key figure in the Haqqani network and an uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban's Interior Minister. He was on the U.S. most-wanted list with a $5 million bounty on his head. His death marks the highest-profile casualty since the Taliban returned to power three years ago.
