Germany Leads EU Push to Classify Iran's IRGC as Terrorist Organization Based on Court Ruling
May 27, 2024, 05:09 PM
Several European Union countries, including Germany, are pushing to classify Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This initiative is based on a ruling by the Higher Regional Court of Düsseldorf. German reports indicate that the German government is backing the designation. The German Press Agency (dpa) reported that diplomats have confirmed the push. However, the UK government opposes the proscription, citing concerns that it would end diplomatic relations with Iran. German Member of European Parliament, Hannah Neumann, has emphasized that the German court verdict is sufficient for the terror listing, urging EU officials to act. The news was also reported by BILD.
