Iran Executes 68-Year-Old Jamshid Sharmahd, Iranian-German Tondar Leader Abducted from Dubai
Oct 28, 2024, 05:44 PM
Iran has executed Jamshid Sharmahd, a 68-year-old Iranian-German national and U.S. resident, who was the leader of the Tondar opposition group, following his conviction on charges of 'corruption on Earth' related to terrorism, according to Iranian state media. Sharmahd was accused of orchestrating a 2008 bombing in the city of Shiraz that killed 14 people. He was reportedly abducted by Iranian agents during a layover in Dubai in 2020 and brought to Iran for trial. His daughter, Gazelle Sharmahd, has been actively advocating for his release and denies the allegations against her father. The execution has drawn condemnation from Germany, with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock denouncing it as unacceptable and warning of serious consequences. The U.S. Special Envoy for Iran also criticized the execution, and Amnesty International had condemned the trial as unfair.
