Iran Executes Over 900 People in 2024, Including 31 Women, UN Reports
Jan 7, 2025, 09:30 AM
Iran executed at least 901 people in 2024, marking the highest number of executions in the country since 2015, according to the United Nations. The majority of these executions were related to drug offenses, but the tally also included political dissidents and individuals connected to the 2022 mass protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. The UN reported a significant increase in the number of women executed, with at least 31 women facing the death penalty in 2024, the highest annual figure in 17 years. Many of these women were convicted of murder, often in cases involving domestic violence, child marriage, or forced marriage. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed deep concern over the rising trend of executions in Iran and urged the country to halt this practice and consider abolishing the death penalty.
