IAEA Again Censures Iran; Tehran to Activate Advanced Centrifuges in Response
Nov 21, 2024, 09:52 PM
The International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors has passed a resolution censuring Iran for its lack of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, marking the second such resolution this year. The resolution, submitted by European powers and the United States, was approved with 19 votes in favor, 3 against—including Russia, China, and Burkina Faso—and 12 abstentions. It calls on Iran to urgently improve cooperation with the IAEA and requests the agency to produce a comprehensive report on Iran by Spring 2025. In response, Iran's Foreign Ministry and Atomic Energy Organization condemned the resolution as "political and destructive" and announced they would activate a significant number of "new and advanced" centrifuges to increase uranium enrichment, warning of a "proportionate response."
